“E.T.” was already Katy Perry’s most downbeat single–certainly more so than anything released off Teenage Dream–so it makes a weird sort of sense that it’d get the full guitars-and-angst treatment by Wynter Gordon at a private Sydney show. I suppose you could twist some kind of wringer out of “Hot N Cold,” but why? Anyway, the “Sugar” singer emotes as well as she possibly could on a song that once contained the lyrics “what’s next? Alien sex!” It’s more novelty than necessity, but hey, it beats flying out to Australia and trying to wrangle your way into a low-key gig.
