The Popdust Files: cars, Cover, the cars, weezer
All right, so there’s not a whole lot of mystery held in Weezer’s cover of The Cars’ 1984 MTV classic “You Might Think.” In fact, listened at a low volume, the only thing obviously differentiating it from the original is that singer Rivers Cuomo doesn’t even attempt the Elvis-like baritone of Cars singer Ric Ocasek’s spoken-word breakdown (“But you kept it going…”) during the song’s bridge. But hell, it’s one great, smile-inducing summertime rock/pop band covering a great, smile-inducing rock/pop song by another great, smile…yeah, you know. If it can’t bring the littlest bit of sunshine to your day, then you really must be letting the heat get to you. (Understandable, truth told. It’s fuckin’ hot out there today.)
This is from the Cars 2 soundtrack, which given the similarly faithful Rascal Flatts cover of Tom Cochrane from the original movie, probably explains a lot. Does Weezer also have a top ten crossover hit in their future, then? (No.)
