We mentioned last week that analysts had projected Lady Gaga to become the first artist since Taylor Swift to sell a million in her first week. Well, the figures are now officially in, and it looks like Gaga has made good on expectations. Billboard reports that Born This Way moved 1,108,000 in its first week of release—the best opening week for an album since 2005, when 50 Cent’s sophomore The Massacre sold 1.14 million. It’s also about 1.08 million more than Gaga’s first album, The Fame, sold in its premiere week back in August 2008, when Lady Gaga was still just “that blonde chick who did ‘Just Dance’.”
Our congratulations to Ms. Germanotta on her considerable achievement, one of the few sales benchmarks that really still means something in the pop music world of the ’10s. Now all eyes turn to Lil Wayne and Tha Carter IV, as we see whether or not he can match the mil that Carter III sold in its first week of release in June 2008. Someone’s gotta continue to rep for the fellas, no?
