The Popdust Files: lil wayne, unplugged
Lil Wayne will hardly be the first rapper to take the mic at an MTV Unplugged performance when laces up for his live gig on Jun 12th—Jay-Z’s performance with The Roots a decade ago was a classic, and during the first wave of the series, LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul all gave it a shot as well. Still, Weezy’s selection comes as something of a surprise—maybe there isn’t as much of a rootsy quality to his hip-hop as some of the performers in the past, or because he isn’t as much of a lyrical storyteller, or just because it’s basically impossible to imagine what songs like “A Milli” or “Fireman” would sound like in an acoustic format.
“Lil Wayne is an amazing choice for Unplugged as he is at hip-hop’s forefront — leading a new generation of artists whose appeal spans across music genres and playlists,” says MTV’s Amy Doyle of Tunechi’s selection. “Lil Wayne’s skills, influence, and catalog are a powerful addition to the legacy of artists who have rocked the ‘Unplugged’ stage.” Well, we’ll be watching certainly, as it’s bound to end up as extremely interesting for one reason or another. Just maybe leave the Rebirth material be, Weezy—nobody wants to hear a sweetly-strummed version of “Prom Queen,” trust us.
