The Popdust Files: christina perri, glee, glee, rebecca black

Kurt Hummel > Adele (Again) > Max Adler > Sue Sylvester’s Spanx > Everyone’s Embarrassing Dance Moves > “Jar of Hearts” > Rebecca Black > Lauren’s Yellow Monstrosity Of A Dress

If last week was Glee gently finding its true footing again, this week it was back with a vengeance just in time for Junior Prom, where everyone’s fears bubbled to the surface, splattered on the gym floor for all to see, and were picked up and donned again proudly by the end of the night.

Thanks to a last minute cancellation by Air Supply, the McKinley prom is without entertainment. Enter the glee club, who will take the gig for a mere $400 towards their New York fund. Under the strict stipulations, they can’t perform any of the “worst” songs the group has ever done. (An extensive list can be found in Coach Sylvester’s spanx, including but not limited to: “Run Joey Run” and the “Crazy In Love/Hair” mashup.) When Schue informs the club of the plans, Mercedes leaves the room depressed because no one has asked her to the prom. She talks a big game about not needing a man, but for one night just wants someone to make her feel like Cinderella. Luckily, Captain Berry has a plan: a prom threeway (not the kinky kind) with Sam, where they’ll pool all their money together to do prom on a budget.

At Breadstix, the only restaurant in all of Lima, Kurt very sweetly asks “Blaine Warbler” to be his date to the prom.  Blaine is hesitant. Right after he came out, he asked the only other gay kid at his old school to a Sadie Hawkins dance (just as friends), only to get the living crap beat out of them before they even made it through the door. While Blaine isn’t necessarily inclined to hide now, he admits going to a dance with a boy is a sensitive subject. But how can he resist Kurt Hummel? They’ll go to the prom together, with Kurt envisioning it as a way for them to stand up to all their bullies together, and Blaine excited by the chance to “jam” with the New Directions during their prom number.

Another one who’s never turned down the chance to perform, Rachel begins practicing Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” in front of the bored AV Club. One verse in and Jesse St. James magically reappears, knowing exactly what song they are singing and stalking down the auditorium steps like a giant, wonderful creep. This is a perfect moment for the two characters on the show most living in their own personal musicals, and reminds us why their particular brands of crazy are so perfectly matched up. After they finish, Jesse reveals that he failed out of college because he only attended his show choir rehearsals, assuming that like at Carmel they’d just hire an Asian to take his Math, English and “Scientifics” classes. He’s returned to Lima both out of necessity and to make amends with Rachel by taking her to the prom which doesn’t fly with Finn.

In class, Artie wheels in to apologize to Brittany for his mistake last week with a song slash prom proposal. Once again his boys appear as he breaks out into “Isn’t She Lovely,” which Mercedes rightfully points out is supposed to be about a baby (well, Brittany basically is one, so this sort of makes sense). The whole class plays along as a makeshift band, but an embarrassed Brittany still won’t go to prom with Artie, instead opting to go by herself and dance with other people’s dates. Smart move, Britt.
