The Popdust Files: calvin harris, feuds, katy perry, twitter

The Scottish DJ/producer Calvin Harris made headlines—and attracted a few “kill yourself” catcalls—when news that he’d pulled out of Katy Perry’s tour blipped across the wires. Harris was quick to tweet an apology after the announcement came out, saying that he’d sacrificed himself for the fans:

Sorry to all who wanted to see me with Katy – her team suddenly moved the goalposts, and i was to appear on stage with no production… It would have looked shit, sounded shit – trust me you would have been more disappointed SEEING the show than u are with me cancelling… That’s the honest truth… Her show is AWESOME, you’ll all have an amazing time without me. (especially w/o me DJing on a cardboard box in front of a pink curtain)… I am really sorry @katyperry I’m just upset because I really wanted to play but ur team made it impossible

Perry, however, was not satisfied with this apology, snipping back, “…funny the goal post seems to be perfectly fine for New Young Pony Club, Yelle, Robyn, Marina & The Diamonds to name a few. or how bout Janell [sic] Monae and her 16 piece band… Etc… it’s fine, I’m used to you canceling on me, it’s become ur staple!” Meow! These were apparently the tweets that broke her fans’ back and caused the rancor to run free, and Harris later lamented, “The internet is a really depressing place sometimes… The whole KP stuff shd never have been on twitter, I was trying 2 handle it pro behind the scenes but i wont let myself get ripped like that.” Well, we hear you on the first part, dude.

So who is Harris, anyway? Well, he’s a producer/DJ whose first album I Created Disco came out in 2007, and since its release he’s released another record and worked with Kylie Minogue and Dizzee Rascal; among his collaborations with the fleet-tongued London MC was the UK #1 “Dance Wiv Me,” which came out in 2008:

Soon after that, Harris went to #1 on his own with the moody “I’m Not Alone”:

As is the way with fights that transpire over the Internet, Harris has already bounced back; earlier today he tweeted that he was following in Snoop Dogg’s footsteps and working with Charlie Sheen—and that he got a new Glockenspiel to boot! Let’s hope that’s a precursor to him and Perry returning to the happier, cardboard-box-free point in their relationship—just two years ago—when he was giving a blippy rework to Perry’s “Waking Up In Vegas”:
