The Popdust Files: Ark Music Factory, Good Morning America, Gotta Get Down on Friday, rebecca black

In case you hadn’t noticed, today is indeed that day of the week that comes after Thursday and before Saturday (and Sunday…yeah, you know the drill by now). Little surprise, then, that Rebecca Black should choose today to make her national TV debut, making an appearance on Good Morning America earlier today, with an On Air with Ryan Seacrest radio appearance to follow. Sitting down with host Andrea Canning from the comfort of her California home, Black talked about the “Friday” sensation, coping with the haterade, and sent out a personal message to a very special someone in the hopes for an eventual collaboration.

“I really do [feel like I’m in a dream,” Black said of the entire “Friday” experience. “I can’t tell if I’m awake or not.” A celebrity for all of one calendar week, Black showed an impressive resolve and self-awareness when confronted by Canning with some of the mean comments directed towards the video, like “Even deaf people are complaining” (Black: “It doesn’t bother me”) and “I hate her voice, it’s gonna be stuck in my head for life” (“I think that’s an accomplishment… it’s gonna be stuck in her heads, so that’s the point of it, it’s a catchy song.”)

By her own admission, though, Black wasn’t always such a tough cookie. When she first started getting the ‘Net hate, of which she said the meanest comment was “I hope you cut yourself, and I hope you get an eating disorder so you’ll look pretty…and I hope you go cut and die,” she took it much more to heart. “I did cry,” Black said of her initial reaction. “I felt like this was my fault, and I shouldn’t have done this, and this is all because of me.” (Her mom, Georgina Marquez Kelly, had a much more visceral reaction to the comments: “I probably could have killed a few people,” she coolly admitted. And she has the know-how to pull it off: Kelly is a veterinarian who performs “in home pet euthanasia.”)

But Rebecca persevered, and today she remains confident, if not unrealistic, when assessing her own abilities. “I think I have talent on some level,” she told Canning. “I don’t think I’m the worst singer, but I don’t think I’m the best singer.” On request, Black demonstrated her instrument in a more objective, less auto-tuned context, singing the first few bars of “The Star Spangled Banner” in a well-bodied, melodic voice, though one with a noticeable teenage lilt. “Her voice was actually really good,” said Ark Music Factory producer Patrice Wilson, when asked how much they had to auto-tune Black’s vocal on the song.

Black, who could be heard performing a live acoustic version of “Friday” in between interview segments, was also given a platform to send a message to her “dream duet” partner, Justin Bieber. “I have Bieber fever—I am in love with Justin Bieber.” confessed Black. “Justin, if you’re watching this right now—would you do a duet with me? That would be unreal, that would just MAKE MY LIFE!!” Black’s address to her beloved can be viewed in full below:

Good Morning America concluded their segment on Black by mentioning that she had just passed Bieber on the iTunes chart by reaching No. 39, but since then, the song continues to climb higher and higher, reaching No. 28 by the time of posting. Exactly how high can she get before the internet finally loses interest? We so excited to find out.
