The Popdust Files: kim kardashian, the-dream

The collaboration between R&B alchemist The-Dream and reality-TV franchise player Kim Kardashian “Jam” will likely be everywhere within the next six hours, so get ready. “Jam” a four-on-the-floor club banger that seems to sample a very brief snippet of The-Dream’s awesome “Florida University,” although it dispenses with that song’s playful swagger for an all-business, bass-heavy beat.

Perhaps in an effort to preserve her “slightly bored Valley Girl” anticharisma, the heavily flanged Kardashian sounds barely engaged with her own song, even though the central meta-conceit of her singing about her feeling great—she’s cutting the line, doing tequila shots, and listening to her own song while getting paid to be at a nightclub—would seem to at least sort of engender something resembling excitement. (I mean, do you know how much she makes from those walk-bys?) Yes, the Kardashian sisters’ brand of eyelinered, narcotized charm pretty much prints money at this point, but a song about having fun should sound, you know, fun, and not make one wonder if the breathy ennui put front and center wouldn’t be better served by the aesthetics of mousy twee acts like Pomplamoose.
