The Popdust Files: ke$ha

The video for Ke$ha’s “Blow” is a wonder, a clip that combines James Van Der Beek, unicorns, pickup lines involving Muenster cheese, and a gun battle that somehow manages to come off more like the Care Bears Stare than by anything in a cop movie. (It’s still pretty lethal, though.) It will probably make you feel like you are on some sort of intoxicant even if you’re just sitting at your desk trying to figure out ways to will yourself to the end of your workday. (Or until the start of happy hour, if you’re unemployed.)

(Is “K-E-dollar-sign-ha” a reference to this week’s hot mess of a Glee episode? Synergy!)

This seems like as good a time as any to let our audience know that the official Popdust line on Ke$ha is that she is a fantastic pop star. Here are four reasons why.

She’s straightforward. In a time where pop stars are too busy engaging in attention-getting antics in order to accrue Google buzz but not following up on their claims (cough, cough), Ke$ha is pretty WYSIWYG. Of course, “straightforward” doesn’t always mean that she tells her stories in a linear matter! The “plot” of this video puts proof to that. But we at the very least know that…

She just wants her friends and some cheap hooch. In a time when so many songs about “the club” are about flaunting nouveau-riche idiocy—and inappropriately so—she’s all about having fun in the most simple ways: Chilling with friends, making out, and getting plastered. (On cheap booze—none of that bottle-service BS for her.) You might find this fact to be a sign of civilization’s utter decline, but people have always been interested in hedonistic pleasure, and it’s refreshing that she’s harnessing these ideas for her own gain, and not just for attracting the eyes of some leering dudes.

She’s a pretty good rapper! “Blow” doesn’t really show off her flow that much, but consider “Sleazy,” the Andre 3000 remix of which is going to appear on her forthcoming collection of tweaked tracks I Am The Dance Commander.

The opening line of Ke$ha’s verse,”You can imagine the immensity of the fuck I’m not giving,” has a lot going on! The internal rhymes and the quick meter of the line are pretty captivating, and the way it rolls off her tongue has caused it to be quite the brain-sticking rebuke when this reporter is confronted with things that she just doesn’t care about. Yes, she’s often accused of biting her style from ’80s female rappers like L’Trimm and JJ Fad. But there are worse influences to have, and if she can introduce a whole new generation to the very Ke$ha-ish sexual empowerment anthem “Grab It!,” all the better.

She embraces the ugly. At a time when male-female relations are regressing and certain cultural quarters are encouraging women to respond to that fact by not only going to absurd lengths to reach some sort of beauty ideal, but embracing the lunacy—from Botox parties to Bridalplasty—she’s constantly using her body as a canvas for adornments that don’t tie into any prevailing notion of “pretty.” It’s like Live Through This-era Courtney Love, although with glitter glopped on in addition to the gobs of eyeliner.

Plus, I mean, she talks about having a standoff with a bear! How bad-ass is that?
