Days before a possible Grammy win for Producer of the Year, Bruno Mars inaugurated the first remix of his resilient No. 1 hit “Grenade” with a Lil Wayne guest verse. Unfortunately, Weezy struggles to top the original song’s gory metaphors for romantic martyrdom (stabbed, shot, immolated, pulped by onrushing train); his bars are soft-spoken to the point of lethargy. The MC does come up with one memorable line, though its absurdity interrupts the general Smokey Robinson vibe: “For you I’ll jump off Noah’s Ark.” But, like, wouldn’t all that water break your fall? If Bruno really wants to heighten the melodrama, he could always give Tyler the Creator a call.
