Featuring appearances by Jon Lovitz, Mike Myers, the late Phil Hartman’s voice, and alt-rock survivors Linkin Park, last night’s Dana-Carvey-hosted Saturday Night Live sometimes felt like an extended tribute to the 1990s. (And the tail end of the ’80s, too—Carvey’s monologue was a tribute in song to the era that spanned his time on the show, which went from 1986 to 1993.) But surprise guest Justin Bieber wasn’t even an embryo when Carvey left SNL in 1993, as his cameo with the latter’s suddenly hot-and-bothered Church Lady acknowledged:
Bieber mocked his dewy image again in a later sketch, playing the innocent obsession of Andy Samberg’s deranged, hair-coveting Roommate:
Meanwhile, Linkin Park performed a pair of tracks from their most recent album A Thousand Suns, and anyone who last heard the band circa 2002 or so may not have recognized them at first. Compared to the loud rap-rock they broke through with, “Waiting for the End” was almost understated:
Finally, the very percussive “When They Come for Me” went back to the past in a different way, making use of an airhorn and multiple drum kits for something akin to a nu-metal Blue Man Group:
