The Popdust Files: born this way, lady gaga

Lady Gaga has been teasing out her “Born This Way” single and Born This Way album for months, but information has been slower than the molasses dripping from the molasses dress she’s wearing to the Grammys. But someone must have had a videophone peptalk with Beyoncé, because we suddenly have a Gaga breakthrough! We’re liveblogging the lyrics as they appear

**3:04**

As a reward to her fans for making “Thank God For Gaga” a Twitter trending topic (uh, welcome to 2011, folks), Gaga released the first line of upcoming single “Born This Way.” Last September, when Gaga leaked the title at the Video Music Awards, all guesses were pointing to a very strong pro-gay subtext to the single and record. And as the first line shows, the theme is about as subtle as a John Waters flick.

The lyric?

“Don’t be a drag, just be a queen”

There it is, folks. The news peg that will anchor about 200 Don’t Ask Don’t Tell stories this week. If we were going to advance review Born This Way based on these eight words alone, we’d say we love the sentiment, hate the puns and probably complain that a 10-second album is too short. Also, it’s kind of repetitive (how many times can you say “be” or “a” anymore, sheesh), but it lulls us into a nice hypnosis with its easy rhythm and easier wordplay.

In short: It’s not “I was dreaming when I wrote this,” but we’ll take it.

More lines have emerged! We called up the telephone in her hair (a.k.a. the website Gaga Daily) and got the scoop

“No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track baby, I was born to survive”

We wonder if people are going to people are going to catch the subtle political undertones in these vague and cryptic lyrics. Anyway, we’re psyched to see something so explicitly political by the world’s biggest pop star. Go, Gaga, go!

**4:25**

Looks like Billboard got the next batch. Here they are:

Give yourself prudence, and love your friends, subway kid rejoice your truth
In the religion of the insecure I must: be myself, respect my youth

We don’t know who Prudence is, but we’re sure she’s psyched about the shout-out. This is seriously becoming an uplifting be-yourself anthem in the vein of Katy Perry’s “Fireworks” or Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R.” But what’s impressing us is that it’s easily  more explicitly political than either. Around the Popdust office, we’re wondering if this move may cost her some fans in the Red States. Or conversely once this becomes a huge hit, maybe it may push politics farther than any pop song since Loverboy’s 1982 hit “Fuck The Falklands War”

British pop blog PopJustice is tweeting that they are listening to the song right now. Here are some lines they found on the track:

“A different lover is not a sin, believe capital H-I-M
I love my life, I love this record and
mi
amore vole fe yah”

That last part is an old Italian saying that roughly translates to “Love cannot exist without trust.”

**4:46**

Looks like the next batch is popping up via Rolling Stone‘s Twitter account

“My mama told me when I was young, ‘We are all born superstars’
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on/In the glass of her boudoir

Italian and French?! Is this a pop song or a brochure for EPCOT Center?

Where’s our lyric, Gaga? We’re gonna start making them up in a minute. We’re cooking up something inspiring and in Esperanto.

Here’s a video of Gaga on Ellen wishing the host a happy birthday. Then Gaga performs a total party foul and turns the conversation on herself! Looks like she’s performing this song on the Grammys! Here’s hoping she doesn’t get every blogger in the audience to sing it one note at a time.

**5:14**

Duh, MTV reminded us about the part of the song she actually sang on the VMAs

“I’m beautiful in my way, ’cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right track; Baby, I was born this way”

Looks a lot different seeing it in print as opposed to hearing it from someone singing in a meat dress, but what can you do?

A tweet from the Lady herself:

Are you ready for the full lyrics?! Can we trend #bornthiswaylyrics!? It has been in my heart for over a year. I’m so excited to share it.

Because, you know, when I work really hard on something, my secret dream is for it to leak slowly and irritatingly on Twitter. That’s how Salinger was planning on releasing the follow-up to Catcher In The Rye but your failure to make him a trending topic killed him.

Come on, Gaga, you can beat #hoeishfemalenames. Maybe if you went by Stefani Germanotta for the day?

#bornthiswaylyrics is #1 worldwide! It narrowly beat out Demi Lovato and Carmen Sandiego (what, did they find her?!), and the full lyric leak is coming soon!

We’ve taken a minute to dwell on the lyrics and, since there’s no music, sing them to the tunes in our head all day (Iron Maiden, the Alka-Seltzer commercial and songs they play at the circus).

Here are some thoughts

1. Between this, “Firework” and “We R Who We R,” the day of the empowerment and self-actualization anthem is upon us. We’d like to think Christina Aguilera was waaaay head of the curve on this one with “Beautiful” and apparantly Gaga does too—I’M BEAUTIFUL IN MY WAY, ‘CAUSE GOD MAKES NO MISTAKES. The world can’t bring you down, girl!

2. This is easily the worst line in any song of 2011 until Far East Movement make another song: “YOU’RE BLACK, WHITE, BEIGE, CHOLA DESCENT/YOU’RE LEBANESE, YOU’RE ORIENT.”

3. The track was produced by Fernando Garibay, which could be good news (he did Beck’s ““Mixed Bizness”!) or could be very bad news (he did Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind!”)

4. If this makes one Republican congressman who voted against DADT tap his foot, it will all be worth it.

We’ll see you guys when Gaga releases the song second by second on 300 YouTubes!
